Product Advisory Update: CP(AI)O 2030?

Prediction: by 2030, a new role will emerge—the Chief People & AI Officer—that will shape the future of talent in an AI-driven world. This is a newsletter for future CP/AIOs.

Hi Friend! Happy Veterans Day! On this day we honor all who’ve served, including our own Greg Call, Phil Maligsa, Tim Lo, and Santiago Leon (still serving after 23 years, Army Reserve). Thanks to all our Veterans for your service.

Now, what is this brand NEW newsletter?

We’ve had a chance to learn from 150+ TA leaders this year, and based off our convos, we predict that by 2030, a new role will emerge: the Chief People & AI Officer. This is a role that will shape the future of talent in an AI-driven world.

So, this is a newsletter for our Product Advisory Board members - many of you whom are the current/future CP/AIOs.

As an advisor, we’ll be looking to co-create the content in this newsletter with you. Have you recently published anything or spotted a great job opportunity? Let us know about it, and we’ll include it in the next edition.

Between Coffee & Chaos: Founder Thought Of The Week

Lots of companies are using AI to automate TA teams’ jobs - we think that’s the worst and most wasteful application of AI.

My cofounder Greg & I started Upwage in 2022 because we knew AI had the potential to positively and negatively impact the livelihoods of billions. We set out to find a way to harness the power of AI for the good of the people (yes, we’re die-hard optimists).

So while a lot of companies were using AI to automate away people’s jobs, we were focused on the holy grail - how to use the power of AI to improve quality of hires, decrease turnover, and ultimately, help talent find meaningful work in the age of AI.

We’re in awe of some of your recent big AI-powered turnover wins:

  • A superstar recruiting team at a national retail chain cut turnover by 24%, saving over $1M per year

  • An innovative CPO reduced call-center turnover by 35% for $920k in savings

  • A brilliant head of TA at a healthcare company slashed turnover by 48%, saving the company $7M in attrition costs

Proud to be in partnership with y’all and grateful to be on this journey with you,

Diana Tsai

CEO & Cofounder, Upwage

On the AI Frontier

  • Meta is working with US government to use LLama AI - One major policy issue is on whether Open Source LLMs fit into the traditional Open Source Software model, or if they require a new approach. Either way, this validates the market for an Open Source product, in whatever form it may take.

  • T Mobile Strikes $100M Deal With Open AI- T-Mobile and OpenAI are joining forces to launch a revolutionary AI platform that listens, learns, and acts on customer needs before they even ask. Could this be the future blueprint for seamless, proactive customer service across industries?

  • DeepMind’s Talker-Reasoner framework brings System 2 thinking to AI agents - heard of “Thinking Fast and Slow”? Most LLMs so far have focused on optimizing for “Thinking Fast”, but this new framework (and a few other recent trends) point toward major progress in teaching an AI how to “Think Slow”. We see the former as important for screening, while the latter will have a huge impact on sourcing and sorting.

  • Anthropic’s new AI can use computers like a human - still in beta, this new tool has broad implications for accessibility, back office automation, and that guy above who insists on applying to every job posting.

  • The US Military Just Adopted AI - one week after China announced their use of Llama AI for the military, the US military announced this partnership to accelerate adoption.
